* 일본에서 보도를 통해 [[5.18민주화운동]]을 접한 [[도미야마 다에코]]는 그 참상과 [[광주광역시|광주]] 시민들의 투쟁을 널리 알리고 싶어 했다. 제작 기간에 긴 시간이 소요되지 않고 메시지 전달에도 효과적이기 때문에 판화를 채택했다.<br />
* [[도미야마 다에코]]는 이 연작을 1980년 7월 초 슬라이드로 제작해 다음 해 4월 동료들과 함께 영화 「[[자유광주]]」로 만들어 일본에서 상영했다.<br />
